IPMAT time management and attempt strategy

Quick answer
How to split time and choose questions in IPMAT Indore, Rohtak and JIPMAT: sectional clocks, skip rules, negative marking maths and a mock review routine.
How much time should I spend per question in IPMAT? It depends on the exam, but a good rule is to flag a question if you have no path in about 30 seconds or if it passes about two minutes.
Knowing the content is half the exam. The other half is deciding what to attempt and when to move on. The three exams run on different clocks, so the plan for each is different. All facts below are from the 2026 official documents.
The three clocks
| IPMAT Indore | IPMAT Rohtak | JIPMAT | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time | 40 min per section, three sections | 120 min, one paper | 150 min, one paper |
| Order | fixed for everyone | you choose | you choose |
| Marking | +4 / -1, no negative in Short Answer | +4 / -1 | +4 / -1 |
Details: Indore, Rohtak, JIPMAT.
IPMAT Indore: three separate 40-minute races
The official procedure gives a time per section and a fixed order. Time you save in one section does not carry to the next, so you cannot rescue a weak section later. That means:
- Practise every section as its own 40-minute block.
- Set a budget per question. IIM Indore does not publish question counts, but if a section had 30 questions that would be a little over a minute each, so a question that takes three minutes must be worth it.
- In the Short Answer section there is no negative marking, so always type something for questions you have worked on, but do not sink ten minutes into one.
- Keep the last two or three minutes of each section for a pass over the questions you flagged.
Rohtak and JIPMAT: one clock, your split
With one clock you decide the split. A starting plan to test in mocks, not a rule:
- Spend the first 2 to 3 minutes scanning the sections and choosing the order.
- Start with the section where you are fastest to build confidence and bank marks.
- Give each section a time box that roughly matches its marks, and note the clock at each section's end.
- Keep 8 to 10 minutes at the end for flagged questions.
The skip rule
Decide before the exam: if you cannot see a path in about 30 seconds, flag and move on. If you are on a path but it is taking more than about two minutes (one and a half in Verbal), flag and move on. Most students lose more marks to one stubborn question than to ten skipped ones. A skipped question costs you nothing. A wrong one costs you 1 mark and the time spent.
Negative marking maths
Each right answer gives 4 and each wrong one takes 1, in the MCQ parts. If you can eliminate to two options, a guess has an expected value of (4 x 0.5) - (1 x 0.5) = 1.5 marks, which is positive. With four equal options and no information, the expected value is (4 x 0.25) - (1 x 0.75) = 0.25, close to nothing. So:
- Do not guess blindly if you can't eliminate anything. Skip and use the time elsewhere.
- Guess when you can remove two options.
- In the Indore Short Answer section, always give an answer, because there is no negative marking.
Accuracy over attempts
A student who attempts 70 questions at 85% accuracy beats one who attempts 90 at 60%. Aim for steady accuracy first and raise attempts as your speed grows. Check your attempts and accuracy in each mock, section by section.
Sectional minimums
IIM Indore requires a minimum mark in each section for the interview call, and shortlist rules differ by category. A very strong Quant score does not save you if Verbal falls below its minimum. So do not drop a whole section to save time. See the cut-offs page.
Mock review routine
- Take the mock under real timing in one sitting.
- For each wrong or skipped question, mark why: concept, calculation, misread, or time.
- Find the questions you should have skipped and the ones you gave up on too early.
- Redo the wrong questions untimed two days later.
- Adjust one thing for the next mock, and only one.
Use the free mocks, which follow each pattern, and build mental speed with the Calculation Gym. Put it all together with the 6-month plan.
Questions students ask
How much time should I spend per question in IPMAT?
It depends on the exam, but a good rule is to flag a question if you have no path in about 30 seconds or if it passes about two minutes.
Is there sectional timing in IPMAT Indore?
Yes. The official procedure gives 40 minutes per section in a fixed order for all candidates.
Should I guess in IPMAT?
In MCQs a guess is worth it when you can remove two options. Do not guess blindly. The Indore Short Answer section has no negative marking, so always answer there.
How many questions should I attempt in IPMAT?
There is no official target. Aim for high accuracy first, then raise attempts as your mocks show you are getting faster.
