The idea
A letter analogy is a code shown by one pair: each letter moves by a fixed number of places, by a growing number of places, or is replaced by its opposite letter. JIPMAT set one each year from 2022 to 2024.
Textbook vs exam method
Textbook method
Write the alphabet positions of the given pair, take the differences position by position, and apply the same differences to the new term.
Exam method
- Shifts first. LCQJ → METN is +1, +2, +3, +4, so ABDF → B, D, G, J.JIPMAT 2022
- Mixed signs are common. AFHO → GBDJ is +6, −4, −4, −5, so CHFM → I, D, B, H.JIPMAT 2024
- If the shifts look random, test opposites. ASHU → ZHSF is A↔Z, S↔H, H↔S, U↔F.
- Eliminate from one letter. usually the first letter alone rules out two options.
