The idea
Relations are written as symbols: "A + B means A is the brother of B". An expression such as M × N − C + F strings several relations together. Questions ask what an expression means, how two of its letters are related, or which of four expressions shows a given relation (Rohtak 2020 asked "which means that C is the son of M?").
Textbook vs exam method
Textbook method
Translate each adjacent pair into a sentence, draw the tree as for statement items, then read the relation. For an expression-choice item, decode all four options and keep the one that gives exactly the required relation and sex.
Exam method
- Pair by pair. M × N − C + F: M is N's father; N is C's sister; C is F's brother.
- Merge siblings. N and C are siblings, so M is C's father too; C + F makes C male: C is M's son.
- Sex check last. "Definitely true" options often fail only on sex (W may be a grandson or a granddaughter).
- Eliminate fast in expression-choice items. the target person must stand on the left of a symbol that fixes the needed sex, and the chain must reach the other person.
