The idea
Someone points at a photograph or introduces a person and describes them by a chain of relations: "He is the only son of the father of my sister's brother". Collapse the chain one link at a time, starting from the speaker, until it ends at a known person. Every Rohtak and JIPMAT paper since 2019 has at least one such item.
Textbook vs exam method
Textbook method
Write the speaker as "me" and rewrite each link: my sister's brother → my brother (if I am a woman); his father → my father; my father's only son → my brother. Then state the relation of the person in the photograph to the asked person.
Exam method
- Collapse from the inside. "son of the daughter of the father of my uncle": my uncle's father = my grandfather; his daughter = my mother or my aunt.
- Use the speaker's sex. Mr. Arav's mother's only son is Arav himself; Rani's sister's brother is Rani's brother.
- Only one option can be true?. When a link has two readings (a boy's grandfather may be paternal or maternal), check which reading the options allow; the key never depends on a reading no option offers.
- Third-person questions. after collapsing, re-anchor to the person asked about (the husband of the speaker, the man's son, Aman's father).
