Solution: n = 5; (5 − 2)³ = 27.
Example 4Typical
Opposite faces are violet, indigo and orange; 512 small cubes have no paint. How many show only violet?
Solution: 128. (n − 2)³ = 512 → n = 10; only violet = the 8 × 8 centre of each violet face: 2 × 64 = 128.
