Lesson 6 of 7 · Simple / grouped bar

Growth rate

DI: Bar Graphs · for IPMAT Indore, IPMAT Rohtak and JIPMAT

The idea of Simple / grouped bar

A simple or grouped bar chart shows one or several series side by side for each category (months, schools, cities). Questions read one or two bars and do one operation: ratio, average, difference, percent change, share. JIPMAT PYQ bar sets of this kind exist: students appeared vs qualified by city (2025), gross traffic receipts vs expenditure 2015-2019 (2024) and percent growth in GDP by region (2024); they are banked as PYQs in this chapter.

The exam method

  1. Derive once. if one series is a percentage of another, write the counts for every category before the questions.
  2. Totals, not averages. compare sums when the divisor is the same.
  3. Cancel early. reduce ratios (480 : 590 = 48 : 59) before multiplying.
  4. Back-solve given ratios. "December : April = 6 : 11" with December = 1800 gives April = 3300 in one step.
