The idea
A stacked bar splits each bar into parts (sugar, milk, other ingredients). In a 100% stacked bar each segment is a percentage of that bar's total; questions give the total (production cost) and ask for amounts, ratios or comparisons of segments.
Textbook vs exam method
Textbook method
- Note whether the bars show amounts or percentages (a 100% bar).
- For each bar in the question, write segment % x total.
- Compare or combine the amounts.
Exam method
- Combine segments before multiplying. 32% + 10% of 1200 = 42% of 1200 = 504.
- Equal totals. compare percentages directly (average sugar share 35.4%).
- Unequal totals. amounts only (37% of 230 vs 50% of 410).
