The idea
A pie chart splits one total into sectors, given in percent or in degrees (360 degrees = 100%). Every question reads one or two sectors and turns them into an amount, a ratio, a difference or a change. JIPMAT asks a pie set almost every year: cost of production (2021), balls by colour and students by activity (2022), brand sales (2023), book production expenses (2024) and a family budget in degrees (2025). All of them are banked as PYQs in this chapter.
Textbook vs exam method
Textbook method
- Note the unit of the sectors (percent or degrees) and the total, if given.
- Convert the sectors you need into amounts: share/100 x total, or angle/360 x total.
- Do the operation in the stem.
- Check the direction word and the unit of the answer.
Exam method
- One conversion. 1% = total/100, or 1 degree = total/360. Write it at the top.
- Stay in shares. for ratios, "what percent of" and "how many times": the total cancels.
- Anchor on a given sector. when the total is missing.
- Changes on several sectors. add the changes in share points (A +50% of 45 = +22.5; E +10% of 22 = +2.2; total +24.7%).
