Lesson 1 of 1 · Shadow / sunrise based direction
Shadow rule
Direction Sense · for IPMAT Indore, IPMAT Rohtak and JIPMAT
The exam method
- Convert the side to a heading: front = the shadow's direction; behind = opposite; left = 90° clockwise of the shadow's direction; right = 90° anticlockwise.
- Fix the shadow's compass direction: morning west, evening east.
Worked examples
Example 3Easy
In the morning your shadow falls exactly behind you. You turn 135° clockwise. Which way do you face?
Solution: south-west. The shadow points west and is behind you, so you face east; 135° clockwise from east is south-west.
Example 2Easy
In the evening Ravi's shadow falls to his right. Ravi and Mohan face each other. Which way does Mohan face?
Solution: south. The shadow points east and east is on Ravi's right, so Ravi faces north; Mohan faces the other way.
Watch out
- Second person: "Which direction is Shalini facing?" needs one more reversal after you find Reena's heading.
- Left/right: a shadow on your left means the shadow's direction is 90° anticlockwise of your heading, so you face 90° clockwise of it.
