The idea
A short passage (100–200 words) with five numbered blanks and one question per blank. JIPMAT sets one cloze passage of five blanks every year, and Rohtak has used single passages too. Indore's multi-blank items are separate sentences, not a cloze. Blanks test four things: meaning in context, collocation (fixed partners), connectors (but, instead of, rather than, before) and grammar form (participles, prepositions, no double negatives).
Textbook vs exam method
Textbook method
Go blank by blank and pick the option that fits the sentence.
Exam method
- Skim the passage once. for topic and direction (is it praising, warning, explaining?).
- For each blank, name its type. and apply the matching test:
- Context: predict a word from the clue around the blank, including the next sentence.
- Collocation: which option is the fixed partner (steady stream, put to good use, make room for)?
- Connector: name the relation (contrast → but; replacement → instead of; order → before).
- Grammar: part of speech, participle after a comma, no second negative.
- Answer the easy blanks first;. they make the hard ones clearer.
- Read the passage through with all five answers. before moving on.
