The idea
A one-blank sentence where the options differ only in grammar: a preposition, a verb form, a tense, an article, a conjunction, a pronoun, or the clause that follows an opening phrase. Indore's 2023 paper had "It grieved me ___ my friend's serious illness" (to hear of), and analyses of 2025 report about two grammar items next to the vocabulary FIBs. The old Indore pattern ("single blank, grammar-based" × 5) and Rohtak/JIPMAT grammar items use the same format. These are the fastest marks in the section, provided you apply rules rather than "what sounds right".
Textbook vs exam method
Textbook method
Read each option in the blank and choose the one that sounds grammatical.
Exam method
- Spot what the options vary in. (prepositions? tenses? a/an/the?). That tells you which rule is being tested.
- Find the trigger in the sentence. a time marker, a verb that needs a partner, "neither / hardly / such", "of the…" before the verb, an opening phrase.
- Apply the rule. and predict the form.
- Pick it, and check one trap. is the "natural-sounding" option an Indian-English habit (discuss about, suggested to)?
