The idea
One word is missing, and the sentence itself tells you what kind of word it is. Indore tested single blanks in most years from 2019 to 2023, often as phrase blanks (2021: "domineer over her children", "affects the citizen"), and the 2026 paper leaned on hard words. Rohtak and JIPMAT use plain single-blank vocabulary items. Every item is one of five sub-skills: a context clue, a collocation (the word's fixed partner), connotation (positive vs negative shade), a confusable look-alike, or a hard-word set where only one option is defined by the clue.
Textbook vs exam method
Textbook method
Read the sentence, try each option in the blank, and keep the one that "sounds right".
Exam method
- Find the clue. Underline the words that define the blank: a phrase after a colon or dash, a "so… that" result, or an example.
- Find the signal. Contrast (although, but, unlike, far from, rather than) flips the clue; support (and, colon) keeps it; cause (so… that, because) makes the blank cause the result.
- Predict. your own word, even a plain one ("careful", "harmless").
- Match and eliminate. Cut options of the wrong direction first, then the wrong shade, then the wrong part of speech.
- Re-read the full sentence. with your choice. For hard-word sets, you only need to know one or two words: cut the ones you know are wrong.
