The idea
A modifier is a word or phrase that describes something. It must sit next to the thing it describes. When an opening phrase has no doer of its own, English reads the first noun after the comma as its doer; if that noun is wrong, the modifier dangles (Walking home, a fox was seen says the fox was walking). A misplaced modifier is in the wrong spot (only, or a describing phrase next to the wrong noun). Indore 2020 Q17 (karate) is a dangling-modifier item.

Dangling modifiers (dangling-modifier)
| Opener | Right | Wrong |
|---|---|---|
| -ing phrase | Walking home, I saw a fox. | Walking home, a fox was seen by me. |
| having + past participle | Having read the letter twice, Priya signed it. | Having read the letter twice, it was signed by Priya. |
| past participle | Exhausted after the climb, the hikers rested. | Exhausted after the climb, the stream looked inviting. |
| to + verb (purpose) | To get the car repaired quickly, we took it to the nearest garage. | To get the car repaired quickly, the nearest garage was chosen. |
| besides / after + -ing | Besides offering physical rewards, karate can turn the body into a weapon. | Besides offering…, when karate is practised the body can be turned… |
Two repairs: (1) put the doer right after the comma, or (2) turn the opener into a full clause with its own subject (When I was walking home, a fox crossed the road).
Misplaced modifiers (misplaced-modifier)
| Right | Wrong / unclear |
|---|---|
| She eats only vegetables that are grown on her farm. | She only eats vegetables that are grown on her farm. |
| The waiter brought us a bowl of dal served with rice. | Served with rice, the waiter brought us a bowl of dal. |
| A reward of five thousand rupees was offered by the owner. | A reward was offered by the owner of five thousand rupees. |
Spoken English often puts "only" before the verb; test it only when the placement changes or blurs the meaning.
Exam method
- Opening phrase before a comma?. Name its doer.
- Read the first noun after the comma. If it is not that doer, the sentence dangles.
- Pick the option. that puts the doer first, or that gives the opener its own subject.
- Describing phrase in the middle or end?. Check it touches its noun.
