The exam method

  1. If every verb agrees, look elsewhere (tense, pronoun, preposition), or choose "No error".
  2. Underline the verb. of each clause (in spot-the-error, usually part B or C).

"I" takes "was" in a statement of fact; "were" with "I" is only for unreal conditions and wishes. Error in (A): When I was a newspaper journalist.
