The idea

In the active voice the doer is the subject (The cat drank the milk). In the passive the receiver of the action becomes the subject and the doer moves into a "by" phrase or disappears (The milk was drunk by the cat). Only verbs with an object can be made passive. A change of voice changes nothing else: the tense, the modal, the time words and every other word stay the same. JIPMAT asks this in every paper (2 items a year from 2021 to 2026) in both directions, active to passive and passive to active. Rohtak 2025 also had two.

Textbook vs exam method

Exam method

  1. Name the tense of the given verb. in two seconds (was + -ing = past continuous; will + base = simple future).
  2. Eliminate options with the wrong voice. a "passive" option without be + past participle, or an "active" option that still has one.
  3. Eliminate options with the wrong tense. of "be" (the commonest trap: was helped for were helping).
  4. Eliminate role swaps. and changed words (modal, article, time phrase).
  5. The survivor is the answer; check the past participle (drunk, given, broken).
