The idea
Comparison clues (taller, heavier, scored more) put people or objects in order. Single questions ask who is first, last or k-th (Rohtak 2020: who scored second highest; JIPMAT 2023: who ran fastest); sets add a few known values and ask which value is possible. Rohtak 2019 asked a tastiness chain with a "not tastier than" clue (ties allowed).
Textbook vs exam method
Textbook method
- Turn each clue into a relation and join them into chains.
- Merge chains through common members; place members fixed by rank clues ("heavier than only one").
- List every order that fits; the answer must be the same in all of them, else it cannot be determined.
- For values, bound each person by the known values above and below.
Exam method
- Rank clues first. "C weighs 51 kg and is heavier than only one" → C 7th of 8.
- Chain. D (72) > A > B > G.
- Fill the top/bottom. the heaviest weighs over 80 kg, so it is not D (72): it is E.
- Possible values. H lies between D (72) and C (51): 63 kg fits; 84, 50 and 34 do not.
