The idea
Main-idea questions ask what the whole passage is doing: its central claim, its purpose, or the summary that covers all of it. They appear in almost every IPMAT RC set ("The passage is chiefly concerned with", "The main point the passage makes is", "The objective of the passage is to"). The right answer must cover the whole passage and match the author's attitude. It cannot be a single example, and it cannot claim more than the passage does.
Textbook vs exam method
Textbook method
Read the passage, identify the topic sentence of each paragraph, and combine them into a statement of the theme. Check each option against this statement.
Exam method
- Write your own one-liner first. (topic + claim). Example: "Sleep is a part of fitness, and losing it harms health."
- Classify each option. too narrow (one paragraph, one example), too broad (bigger than the passage), distorted (right words, wrong claim), reversed (the view the author rejects), or just right.
- Check the verb for purpose questions. "argue / defend / criticise" need an author with a stance; "describe / explain" need a neutral author. A balanced passage cannot have the purpose "to criticise".
- Extreme-word rule. if an option says always, never, entirely, only, solved, proved and the passage hedges (may, some, often, begun to), eliminate it.
