The idea
This is the Rohtak/JIPMAT (and SSC/bank) format: part of a sentence is in bold (or underlined), three replacements are offered, and (D) "No improvement" is the fourth option. Unlike the Indore format, the bold part may already be correct, so you must first decide whether there is an error, then choose the right fix.
Textbook vs exam method
Textbook method
Try each of (A), (B) and (C) in the sentence; if none sounds better, choose (D).
Exam method
- Read the full sentence. and look at the words just before and after the bold part.
- Test the bold part against a short checklist. subject and verb agree? tense fits the time words? pronoun in the right case? fixed partners (no sooner… than, hardly… when, prefer… to, discuss + no preposition) correct?
- If a rule is broken, predict the fix. and find it among (A)-(C).
- If no rule is broken, choose (D). Do not swap a correct form for an equally correct one; the question asks for an improvement.
- Re-read. your choice in the sentence.
