The idea
Indore has used one sentence-correction format every year from 2019 to 2024: the incorrect part of the sentence is underlined; choose the alternative that makes the sentence correct (27 questions in those six papers). The underlined part always contains at least one error, and the options try to fix it. Some fix it and add a new error, some fix only half, one often repeats the original, and one is right. Almost every item tests one of six families: subject-verb agreement, verb forms (tense, conditionals, verb patterns), pronouns, structure (modifiers, parallelism, comparison, word order), usage (prepositions, idioms, confusable words, redundancy) and nouns/articles.
Textbook vs exam method
Textbook method
Read each option back into the sentence and choose the one that "sounds right".
Exam method
- Read the whole sentence. , not just the underlined part. The error is often caused by a word outside it ("yesterday", "the city of Kundapur", "Besides offering…").
- Name the error and its rule. in two or three words ("each = singular", "if-clause: no would", "dangling modifier").
- Predict the fix. , then scan for it.
- Eliminate in pairs. Where options split on a point (best/better, who/whom, its/their), settle that point and cut half of them. Then check the survivors for a second error.
- Re-read the full sentence. with your choice. It must be grammatical and keep the meaning.
