The idea
Sometimes neither of two conclusions is forced, but together they cover every case: if one is false the other is true. Then the answer is "Either I or II follows". It appears in PW and coaching sets in every syllogism chapter and is the classic trap in Rohtak-style statement-conclusion questions.
Textbook vs exam method
Textbook method
Mark each conclusion as definite, possible or impossible. If two are only possible, check that they speak about the same two classes and that they cannot both be false.
Exam method
- Spot the shape. Some/No, All/Some-not, Some/Some-not with the same subject and predicate.
- Check that neither follows alone. If one of them is already definite, the answer is that one, not "either".
- Reject All/No. "All apples are donkeys" and "No apple is a donkey" can both fail.
