The idea
Two to four statements about classes (All, Some, No, Only a few) are taken as true, and you decide which conclusions must follow. Rohtak asks two or three every year (2019 Q5, Q7; 2020 Q7, Q16, Q17) and JIPMAT one (2021 Q23, 2022 Q9, 2025 Q5, 2026 Q14).
Textbook vs exam method
Textbook method
Represent each class by a circle. "All A are B" puts A inside B; "No A is B" keeps them apart; "Some A are B" overlaps them; "Some A are not B" leaves part of A outside B. Draw the arrangement with the fewest overlaps, then try to break each conclusion by redrawing: a conclusion follows only if no fitting diagram breaks it.
Exam method
- Chain the 'All's. All sparrows are birds, all birds are mountains, all mountains are skies: all sparrows (and all birds) are skies.JIPMAT 2022
- Test the reverse. "All skies are birds" reverses a chain: never forced.
- Some + All. Some bottles are drinks and all drinks are cups: some bottles are cups, and some cups are drinks.JIPMAT 2026
- No + Some. No tree is a flower and some trees are fruits: the fruits that are trees are not flowers, but "no fruit is a flower" is not forced.Rohtak 2019
- Facts format. "All cats like to run; some cats like to swim": cats that swim also run.Rohtak 2020
- 'Does not follow' items. mark each conclusion first, then pick the option listing exactly the ones that fail.
