Nearest meaning
Synonyms, Antonyms, Spelling · for IPMAT Indore, IPMAT Rohtak and JIPMAT
The idea
A word is given in capitals and you choose the option nearest to it in meaning. Rohtak sets 2 to 12 such vocabulary items a year (more in 2025-26), JIPMAT 4 to 5; the hard ones use exam words such as obsequious, pusillanimous or perfidious. The options are built to trap you: one is usually the opposite, one looks or sounds like the given word, and one is a related idea that is not the same.
Textbook vs exam method
Textbook method
Recall the meaning of the given word and pick the option with the same meaning.
Exam method
- Define first. Say the meaning in your own words before you look at the options (ebullient = bubbling with energy).
- Remove the antonym. Find the option that means the opposite and cross it out.
- Remove the look-alikes. Options that share letters with the given word (eminent for ebullient) are traps.
- Check degree and tone. of what is left: the key must match in strength and in approval or disapproval.
- If stuck, use roots. bene- (good), mal- (bad), loqu- (speak), anim- (spirit), ver- (true), mend- (fault, lie).
