Worked examples
In a family each daughter has as many brothers as sisters, and each son has twice as many sisters as brothers. How many sons are there?
Solution: 3. With b sons and g daughters: b = g − 1 and g = 2(b − 1), so b = 3 and g = 4.
M is the father of D and has only two children. D is the brother of C, who is the daughter of K. T is K's granddaughter and U is T's father. How is U related to D?
Solution: brother-in-law. T is a child of D or of C; her father U is not D, so T is C's daughter and U is C's husband: the husband of D's sister.
