Worked examples
B is the son of C but C is not B's mother; A and C are a married couple; E is C's brother; D is A's daughter; F is B's brother. Which are true: (A) E is D's uncle, (B) A is B's mother, (C) A has two children, (D) there are four males?
Solution: A, B and D. C is the father, A the mother of B, F and D (three children, so C is false); E is the children's uncle; males are B, C, E, F.
In a family each daughter has as many brothers as sisters, and each son has twice as many sisters as brothers. How many sons are there?
Solution: 3. With b sons and g daughters: b = g − 1 and g = 2(b − 1), so b = 3 and g = 4.
