The idea
Every team plays every other team once. Wins, draws and losses add up to n - 1 for each team, and the points add up to 2 per match. A partly erased table is solved by turning each known row into its possible (W, D, L) splits.
Textbook vs exam method
Textbook method
- Count matches: n(n-1)/2, and total points = 2 x matches.
- For each team write (W, D, L) from its points and losses.
- Use "defeated" clues and the totals to fix who beat whom.
- Check that every team's row adds to n - 1 matches.
Exam method
- Split table. 8 points in 5 matches is 4-0-1 or 3-2-0; a loss count of 0 selects 3-2-0.
- Leftover points. 30 minus the known teams' points is shared by the rest; the "less than 5" clue then decides.
- Draw count. sum draws per team, then halve.
