The idea
Each person in the row also has a colour, an age or a similar value. Clues mix seats and values. The Rohtak 2020 paper had such a set (eight girls and eight colours, Q1-2). Note that its clues allow two seatings; the paper's key follows one of them (see the key note on that question).
Textbook vs exam method
Textbook method
- Draw the row and a second line for the attribute.
- Place the seat clues.
- Place the value clues: tokens with seats first, then arithmetic on the values.
- Check every clue on the final row and value line.
Exam method
- Tokens. write "Y" (yellow) above a seat as soon as its seat is fixed, even before you know who sits there.
- Seats, then values. settle the row, then the ages by elimination.
- Two fits. try the other side for the first ambiguous clue before trusting a single row.
