The idea
Positions in a row, queue or rank list counted from either end. Rohtak 2019–2020 and JIPMAT 2021 / 2026 asked them (Atul twelfth from the right and fourth from the left; 78 celebrities; Chandrika 8 ranks ahead of Jaya; a row of thirty boys). Everything follows from n = L + R − 1.
Textbook vs exam method
Textbook method
- Write each given position from one end (left/top).
- Use n = L + R − 1 to find the total or a missing position.
- Between two positions a < b there are b − a − 1 people.
- For interchanges, match the moved person's new position with the other person's old one.
Exam method
- Total. 12th from right, 4th from left → 15 boys.Rohtak 2019
- Other end. 18th of 42 from the top → 42 − 18 + 1 = 25th from the last.JIPMAT 2021
- Between. 25th from left and 59th from left → 33 between.Rohtak 2020
- Interchange. Arjun 11th from left, Ravi 17th from right; after the swap Arjun is 13th → Ravi was 13th → 29 in the row.
