The exam method
- Fix the trio. once the team of three is given, only four players remain and each barred pair forces the pairing.
Worked examples
Example 1Sitter
Seven players form one team of three and two of two. Bob and Calieo, Alex and Bob, Danny and Genifer cannot pair; Eric and Federic are together. If the trio is Genifer, Eric, Federic, what are the pairs?
Solution: (Bob, Danny) and (Alex, Calieo). Bob cannot join Alex or Calieo.
Example 2Sitter
Seven friends split into groups of three and four. G sends A and C to the other group. B cannot be with A, so B is with G.
Solution: B and G are in the same group.
Watch out
- Duplicate splits: the order of the two pairs does not matter.
