LR and DI for IPMAT: do you need it, and how to prepare

Last updated · By the IPMATway team, not affiliated with any IIM or NTA · How we check facts

Quick answer

Where LR and DI appear in IPMAT, Rohtak and JIPMAT, which set types to practise, how to read a set fast and which sets to pick in the exam.

Is there logical reasoning in IPMAT Indore? The official 2026 IPMAT Indore sections are Quant MCQ, Quant Short Answer and Verbal Ability, with no separate LR/DI section.

Logical reasoning (LR) and data interpretation (DI) are not equally important across the three exams. Knowing where they count tells you how much time to give them. This guide covers what is asked, how to practise it and how to handle a set in the exam.

Where LR and DI appear

  • IPMAT Rohtak: one of three sections is Logical Reasoning, with 40 questions in the 2026 pattern. See the Rohtak pattern.
  • JIPMAT: a combined section called Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning, 33 questions and 132 marks in 2026. See JIPMAT.
  • IPMAT Indore: the official 2026 sections are Quant MCQ, Quant Short Answer and Verbal Ability. There is no separate LR/DI section, though some data-handling and logic ideas show up inside Quant.

If you are writing Rohtak or JIPMAT, treat LR/DI as a full third of your preparation. If you only want Indore, give it a light share.

The set types you will meet

  • Arrangements: people or objects in a row, circle or grid with conditions ("A sits left of B").
  • Selection and grouping: choose a team or schedule under rules.
  • Games and tournaments: points tables and match results.
  • Tables, bar charts, line graphs and pie charts: read numbers, compute percentages, ratios and changes.
  • Venn diagrams and caselets: word-based data turned into sets.
  • Short logic puzzles: syllogisms, statements and conclusions, coding-decoding, blood relations.

Our LR/DI map lists them by chapter, with notes.

How to attack an arrangement or puzzle set

  1. Read the whole set once, including the questions' stems, before drawing anything.
  2. Draw one clean frame: a row of boxes, a table, a circle. Write fixed facts first.
  3. Add the "if-then" clues and the "cannot" clues last. Do not guess early.
  4. If a case splits into two, write both cases side by side. Do not erase either until a clue kills it.
  5. Answer the questions that do not need extra conditions first. Questions with "if" at the start are usually separate mini-sets.

How to attack a DI set

  1. Read the title, the units and the footnotes. A table in thousands and one in lakhs trap many students.
  2. Look at the questions to see what to compute. You may not need every number.
  3. Estimate first. Many answers are separated enough that rounding works.
  4. Keep ratios and percentages in fraction form (one-fifth, one-eighth) instead of dividing every time.

Picking sets in the exam

Sets differ a lot in difficulty. A good habit is to spend the first two minutes on a quick scan of all sets, then start with the one that looks clear and has the most questions. If a set is still unclear after about three minutes of drawing, leave it. On Rohtak and JIPMAT you have one clock for the whole paper, so skipping is allowed. See time management.

A practice plan

  • Weeks 1 to 3: learn each set type with two or three easy sets of each. Focus on method and a clean diagram.
  • Weeks 4 to 8: one timed set a day (about 8 to 12 minutes each), and review the ones you got wrong.
  • After that: mixed timed blocks of three or four sets, which feel like the real section.

Keep a short log: set type, time, score and what went wrong. After ten sets the pattern will be clear.

Common mistakes

  • Starting to draw before reading the full set.
  • Trying to complete an unclear set because time was already spent (a sunk cost).
  • Calculating exact values when an estimate was enough.
  • Skipping the footnote and the units.
  • Practising only the sets you like.

LR/DI improves quickly with regular practice, since the set types repeat. Combine this guide with the quant strategy and the 6-month study plan.

Questions students ask

Is there logical reasoning in IPMAT Indore?

The official 2026 IPMAT Indore sections are Quant MCQ, Quant Short Answer and Verbal Ability, with no separate LR/DI section.

Is LR and DI asked in IPMAT Rohtak?

Yes. IPMAT Rohtak has a Logical Reasoning section of 40 questions in the 2026 pattern.

Is DI part of JIPMAT?

Yes. JIPMAT has a Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning section with 33 questions in 2026.

How long should one LR/DI set take?

About 8 to 12 minutes is a sensible target. If a set is unclear after about three minutes of drawing, move on.
