The idea
A short paragraph describes one family of five to eight people, sometimes with professions or other attributes, and 2-5 questions follow. The set rewards one careful drawing. Rohtak puts the set-style items in its LR section (2020: an eight-person family; JIPMAT 2021: niece/nephew of Q).
Textbook vs exam method
Textbook method
List the people, write each clue as a tree edge, fix sexes, and add attribute columns (profession, city) next to the names. Use counting clues last to fix whatever is still open. When a clue has two readings, draw both trees.
Exam method
- Anchor clue first. the clue with a unique person ("P has only two children", "K has no siblings").
- Negative clues. "P is the father of R but not the husband of Q" sends Q to the other side of the family.
- Attribute sets. "No lady is a Doctor or a Designer" fixes the sexes of the Doctor and the Designer, and then their spouses.
- Two trees, one answer. "O is the brother-in-law of L" can mean L's wife's brother or L's sister's husband; check that each answer holds in both.
